Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA)
The Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) is the guiding document of the FutureFoodS Partnership, defining the long-term research and innovation priorities needed to accelerate the transition towards sustainable, resilient, and inclusive food systems in Europe.
The SRIA brings together a shared vision for the future of European food systems. By aligning research and innovation priorities, identifying synergies across different domains, and integrating diverse perspectives, the document provides a strategic framework for collaboration and collective action. It outlines concrete priorities and action pathways that support the transformation of food systems and contribute to long-term sustainability goals.
A Collaborative Development Process
The SRIA has been developed through a comprehensive and participatory process involving researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders from across Europe.
During the development phase, draft versions of the SRIA were reviewed and discussed through consultations, workshops, expert meetings, and stakeholder engagement activities. Feedback from the wider food systems community helped validate priorities, refine proposed actions, identify knowledge gaps, and ensure that the agenda reflects a broad range of perspectives and societal needs.
This collaborative approach has resulted in a stronger and more inclusive document that combines scientific expertise, policy insights, and practical experience.
Objectives of the SRIA
The SRIA supports the transition towards sustainable food systems by:
Defining long-term research and innovation priorities;
Strengthening collaboration between science, policy, industry, and society;
Accelerating innovations that contribute to sustainability, health, and resilience;
Promoting knowledge exchange and synergies between European initiatives;
Guiding future research and investment activities within the FutureFoodS Partnership.
Towards Sustainable European Food Systems
European food systems face a range of interconnected challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, food security concerns, and changing consumption patterns. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated and systemic approach.
The SRIA provides a common reference framework to support the development of innovative and effective solutions that are environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable. Through coordinated research and innovation efforts, the SRIA contributes to building a future-proof food system that benefits people, the planet, and society as a whole.
