European Food Systems under Pressure – an RIVM horizon scan

European food systems under pressure from climate change and geopolitical unrest

Climate change, such as drought and extreme weather – has a major impact on European food systems. A new RIVM horizon scan, carried out within the European FutureFoodS Partnership, identifies key trends and future challenges for European food systems. RIVM conducted a literature review and international workshops with policymakers, experts and representatives from industry and civil society in Bulgaria, Germany and Italy. This horizon scan is the first step in a broader foresight study for the European Union and can serve as a basis for policies that anticipate upcoming developments, aiming to ensure healthy and safe food for current and future generations. For the first time, health has been explicitly included as a factor in the food system framework. The full report and key findings are available on our website.
